Snapshots, deckle-edged, black white and blurry, fogged by the climate, blurred by the heat: these are the memories, substitutes for knowing, we use to construct the tale of our life, embroidering the images to link up a story, from disparate images spinning a thread. Shuffle the deck of pictures, spread out a city,a childhood to be invented, a life understood: the chemistry of remembering, fixed on the cards.
